    Baltimore bridge collapse

This one is going to be different then the bridge on 1-95 that was burned down a few months ago in Pennsylvania

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/live/baltimore-key-bridge-collapse-live-updates-after-container-ship-collision-114855033.html

How is this going to affect everyone's commute and life style until a new bridge can be built?

    #17 48 days ago
    Quoted from isJ:

I already read online that DEI was to blame.

Who do you think was on the crew of a ship flagged in Singapore?

    #19 48 days ago
    Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

On top of that it will be years before that bridge is replaced.

Assuming that all the engineering was completed and all of the girders and beams and other building materials were ready and available, how long would it take to build that bridge?

I wonder if ferry boats are going to have to be procured.

    #21 48 days ago
    Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

I'd expect years for a new bridge.
Ferry's won't help. There is already a tunnel nearby, but you just effectively doubled traffic through that tunnel, which was already slow, and now some cargo has to go the long way around Baltimore. The biggest issue is that bridge is now blocking the entire harbor. [quoted image]

"About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority."

So, if you live in Hawkins Point and work in Sparrow's Point you are now looking at a 30 ? mile commute along with 31000 other vehicles? What would that be? An extra 2 hours per day to work and another 2 hours to get home?

    #38 48 days ago

The Federal Govt. is picking up the entire tab to replace this bridge.

    Coming straight from the top.

The Army Corp of Engineers is tasked to clear the waters.

    #44 48 days ago
    Quoted from TheLaw:

I'm guessing I should be angry.
Or happy....? I'll wait for the complaints.

The bridge is too important to sit idle while insurance companies waste time trying to shift blame.

    Quoted from Williampinball:

Yes I heard that but am sure they will get the money back later from the ship owner like he said doesn't have time it will be rebuilded as soon as possible

I'm guessing the U.S. Govt. has enough tools in its toolbox to get the ship owners and insurance to pay up. No ship can come into U.S. waters without approval.

    Quoted from TahoeTony:

Not to make light of this all but how many Haggis machines were on there? I kid!
Watching that bridge fold was horrible. Already hate bridges. Now, a little bit more

You kid, but I think in terms of what classic cars were destroyed in the California fires, etc. One woman that was burned out in the Texas fires lost a house full of antiques.

    Quoted from cottonm4:

    Quoted from Haymaker:

not that it matters but they were all Indian

I was responding to the bullshit DEI statement. And now I must apologize to isJ because I read what he said incorrectly. He was correct when he said that he read about someone talking about DEI being to blame for this accident.

    From some dumb fuck politician:

    https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2024/03/26/baltimore-bridge-dei-utah-lawmaker-phil-lyman-misinformation

"Utah lawmaker blames DEI for Baltimore bridge collapse despite cargo ship collision"

" "This is what happens when you have governors who prioritize diversity over the wellbeing and security of citizens," wrote Lyman, who is running for Utah governor."

    Quoted from Garrett:

Ever deal with an insurance company for a car accident?

Yes. About 6 months ago. Not my fault. I was made whole by the other guy's insurance company.

    Quoted from Garrett:

You think whatever entity carries the insurance on the Dali is going to willy nilly write a check for $1 billion dollars today? Next week?

All I said is that the Federal Govt. is going to pick up the tab. I did not say anything about insurance. Or assigning blame. And I get asked, " By Train?" A train? I'm sorry. I missed the joke.

So let me rephrase: The Federal Govt. is going to provide immediate funding to expedite the rebuilding of this bridge. So all contractors know they will be getting paid for moving fast on this.

Will the US be repaid by the ship company? Who knows?

Egypt played hard ball with the owners of the Ever Given but I don't think anyone knows how that has worked out.

    https://qz.com/2029512/egypt-accepts-an-agreement-to-release-the-ever-given

    #99 47 days ago
    Quoted from Mr68:

    I agree.
Look, he didn't understand the Train quote so I answered. And I did so with no snarkiness or politics.
I myself recently misspoke on Pinside and it is what it is.

    Thank you.

    Quoted from poppapin:

    What a shocker!!

Have you ever had to stand up and present a speech to more than 6 people? You will drink a lot of water. It is stressful.

    #117 47 days ago
    Quoted from flynnibus:

I expect they will likely change the tug policy to escort ships further out into the bay.

I was thinking about that. In hindsite, a tug looks like cheap insurance.

But how many tugs does it take to handle a ship this big? The tug in the picture looks like a bathtub toy in comparison.

It took 5 years to build this bridge in the 70s. All that I have been reading says it will be a long time for a replacement bridge to be built.

This is the bridge I used to drive over the Mississippi while in New Orleans.

    Greater_New_Orleans_Bridges,_New_Orleans,_LA (resized).jpgGreater_New_Orleans_Bridges,_New_Orleans,_LA (resized).jpg

New Orleans still uses ferry boats. The schedule shows 2 ferry boats leaving dock every 30 minutes.

I would be advocating for some ferry boats to help out with the traffic until a new bridge is built. But this would probably open up a whole new can of worms.

    https://www.neworleans.com/plan/transportation/algiers-ferry/#:~:text=Ferry%20Schedule,a%20quarter%20after%20the%20hour.

    #135 47 days ago
    Quoted from flynnibus:

Semis need to go all the way around to the other side of Baltimore to stay on the interstate…

Obviously, I do not know the layout of the land and roads. But would a ferry system for the semis be practical over 3-4 years, if physically possible?

    Quoted from phil-lee:

Yes, I did too 20 Posts back and everyone deemed them unnecessary.
Still the only logical remedy for vehicle traffic.
NC would have already established a Ferry Service by now.

    #149 46 days ago
    Quoted from Mr68:

    Based on a true story

    LOL !!

    #150 46 days ago
    Quoted from flynnibus:

Or you make the area around them shallow to try to use land as the buffer. But again the amount of space needed to be effective is massive… and underwater efforts require upkeep.

But would the ship run aground and bury itself in the mud and be impossible to dig out?

    #154 46 days ago
    Quoted from chillme:

If needed they could off load containers to lighten the load and raise the ship before pulling it back.

I think offloading in the water from a ship that is loaded by an overhead crane would be a tall task. That is a big ship. Like the Ever Given, which took a week to dig out of the Suez Canal.

The opening price for the bridge is $60 million.

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/barges-bringing-cranes-baltimore-help-144922636.html

"Maryland seeks $60M in federal help to start recovery plan for collapsed Baltimore bridge"

"Massive barges carrying cranes streamed toward Baltimore on Thursday to begin the challenging work of removing twisted metal and concrete in an attempt to open a key shipping route blocked by the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge."

    #172 46 days ago
    Quoted from Bublehead:

    That speed clip is fantasy...

You said everything in one sentence. Fantasy.

It is a movie. Movies--where 6 shot revolvers rattle off an endless supply of bullets and the blind date is always good looking.

And don't forget Speed where the bus just happens to have a trap door in the floor board and there just happens to be wheels on the trap door

    Quoted from DadofTwins:

Pinside is mostly a collection of very bright, motivated and high achieving individuals.

I can assure that this does not describe the people I was hanging around in the arcades with in the 60s . I was surprised at how many doctors, lawyers, and accountants are housing loads on pins in their basements when I came to pinside.

    Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

    You could have fooled me.

    See above.

    #198 43 days ago
    Quoted from phil-lee:

replaced all but one of the drawbridges with pop-ups.

    I'll bite. What is a pop-up?

    #200 43 days ago

The cranes to remove the broken bridge are arriving.

I sort of vision it like a crew coming in to take out a tree, once branch at a time.

    #203 41 days ago

    Here it comes.

Those responsible are going to try and weasel their way out of it, it sounds like.
    =================================================

"Companies behind cargo ship that destroyed Baltimore’s Key Bridge seek exemption from legal liability"

" The costs of paying for the accident and its cleanup, and rebuilding the span, will run into the hundreds of millions of dollars if not more."

It looks like the cranes and people are making progress on this project.

How is the traffic in the area? Is it moving OK and everybody getting to work? Or has it been a mess?

    #239 31 days ago
    Quoted from La4s:

I commute through the 895 Harbor Tunnel daily for work. My commute is averaging an additional 25-30 minutes each way on good days. Any minor accident adds another 15-20 minutes. Combine all that with with the ongoing 95 express lane construction north of the city and it is going to be a long 4 or 5 years of commuting. Not sure what can be done to alleviate the traffic.

Who pays for the bridge looks like that will be a long story.

I read where businesses are looking for relief and also employees whose jobs are affected.

What will not ever be reimbursed is all the extra driving time and gas, people, such as yourself, are expending just to get to work. You get to take it in the shorts.

    Here come the lawyers.

    https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/23/business/baltimore-bridge-collapse-lawsuit-hnk-intl/index.html

"Baltimore filed a legal claim on Monday against the owner and manager of the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge last month, causing it to collapse."

The state of Maryland has put some numbers to the bridge rebuild.

    Roughly $2 billion. 4 years.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/body-5th-missing-worker-found-115437869.html

This insurance is going to pay $350 million.

    #253 8 days ago
    Quoted from La4s:

Here is a typical evening rush hour commute heading north through the 895 tunnel. Use to be 10-15 delay.[quoted image]

How long is the delay now?
