Documenting a refreshtoration of an OG Medieval Madness that will be getting the cabinet restored by 80spit and a new playfield will be installed. It will be getting a lot of new NOS parts.

It came from western US thanks to a Pinsider that sold it. Was picked up on 1/26 and showed up at my work 2/8. Was able to pick it up yesterday. Came without a scratch thanks to his great packing. Stripped it down off the pallet and loaded it in wife's truck. Even snagged a coffee while there!

More to come....

All set up before the snow started this morning. Next step is putting a list together. Thanks to the awesome seller, many parts are secured.

Highlight some of the bad spots. At first glance, the cab and playfield look pretty nice.

Agreed. My takeaway from the pictures was the two automotive lifts.

Here’s some before pics of inside cabinet. All the leg plates will be replaced with new.

The playfield is pretty rough. Thankfully the new one will be much better.

It’s like a well worn pair of jeans. Plays great as it is.

Installed the colorDMD today. Got to put 30 some games on it and have fun. It plays perfectly. Thank you Tom! Teardown will start next week.

Following as well. Picking up my MM today and will be doing the same. Already have a color DMD for it too…

I'll be sending out the right, and only, side rail and the back panel for ibis to make new. The ones on it aren't terrible (other than the peeling decal), but for this title, it deserves it.

Battery holder is getting removed. The cancer hasn't spread past the holder.

Yeah, I saw that upon the initial inspection. The board is just fine, just corrosion on the battery holder.

I was a bit shocked that our scores had still been saved after 10 years in storage!

I was going to put in the Franks Coin Battery mod as its quick and easy,

But getting rid of batteries altogether with NVRAM is a better long term solution.

The DMD display was brand new! I'm certain that someone will need it.

I was going to get the Stumblor wide screen to make it look more modern like the remakes.

Its a fun game, we really enjoyed it.

I look forward to seeing it brand new again!

What the hell happened to that back panel? and that top castle looks intimidating to tackle!

#21 61 days ago

It’s just glue residue on the back panel.

#22 61 days ago

Chris did a great job on the playfield and apron.

This is going to be a nice game!

#23 60 days ago

Thanks! It should come out nice. The cabinet is stripped and will be getting redone.

Here’s a nice batch of new stainless parts from Mantis.

That cabinet is going to need a lotta love, lol

But its actually restorable. It wasnt too water damaged, just knocked around a lot.

If Paul wasnt 6 months out on delivery, I would consider a replacement for it.

#25 60 days ago

It’s not bad at all. You should see some of the ones that we’ve been through!

Quoted from dmacy:

I agree.

My Funhouse and The TAF Im working on were flood victims.

The cabinet sides were so swollen you couldnt lift the playfields without splintering wood...

Needless to say, fresh cabs and playfields sorted this out quickly!

I love those little surprises under the apron. When I rebuilt my Laser War, I had David Thiel sign it in that area and cleared over the signature (it's locked in). I asked John Youssi to sign TAF and TZ PFs I have under restoration.

Whose signature is that on this MM PF?

I forgot to highlight that signature. Someone did a clearcoat in place job complete with dirtand I know it wasn’t pinballinreno. I’m guessing maybe the “artist” lol?!

Apologies for slightly de-railing your thread. I am posting this for others who may see something similar and be wondering what it is.

This is a case of applying clear "in place". It's obvious. The person who did this also left the wood rails and cleared over those rails (no image). I was scratching my head why anyone would do this. And then I realized that people are just lazy.

00_sc_cleared_in-place.jpg00_sc_cleared_in-place.jpg

These are some small particles trapped in the clear. I'm guessing that this got into the clear shortly after it was sprayed. Probably during the period it was allowed to dry. I know it was part of the clear process because some sanding with 600 grit removed it.

01_sc_dust_trapped_in_clear.jpg01_sc_dust_trapped_in_clear.jpg

And those wondering, this is what David Thiel's signature looks like. In hindsight, including a date would have been a neat thing to do.

Derail away! That’s very cool info to share, the process to fix, etc.

Love that you had it signed. What a cool signature with the note.

Closeup of this artist. Maybe pinballinreno can share where this machine came from. He had it a long time waiting for restoration. Very thankful he sold it to me and it’s a great resto candidate.

I put a wooden school ruler next to the posts when I take the pictures.

I bought a handful of them off of Amazon for 25 cents each.

Just tape them to the posts.

All those t-nuts are probably still good, just tumble them or wipe then with flitz.

The new ones I have been buying are soft steel and just terrible.

#41 59 days ago

I hear you on T nuts but the ones I’ve found now are good to go. I don’t like to reuse t nuts. I don’t think I have ever reused them. I lost track when I hit 30 playfield swaps.

Bookmarking this thread for the day I finally tear down & shop out my original MM. Thanks for all the reference photos!

Mechanisms are torn down. Flipper assemblies will be all new. Merlin and left popper will be getting new Mantis brackets.

The High_End_Pins redone playfield looks fantastic. Christopher took care of a lot of the mistakes, some scratches, shooter lane, and maybe some other things I’m not sure of.

He even added the left side metal rail notch that was missing on the repro. Looks like it came that way now.

Hard to tell which is original?!

All t-nuts are in. All 8-32. I show 9 on the top and counted 50 on the bottom. That’s a lot more than what I’ve been using on recent swaps!

There’s two t-nuts on the top that I marked, drilled and prepped for the spikes. Didn’t want to chance it so made sure to have spike holes pre drilled and glued.

Sand it and polish it out, it will be perfect!

I just use a dremel and a stone to carefully remove welding globs.

The barrel sander works too, but takes a few sleeves to get it done.

I use the sander to finish the texture.

Yep that’s what I did. . Pics are the progress.
