And so it begins! Putting all my pics here so others can benefit and follow along. This is my first playfield swap. Mistakes will be made. Haha

Let's see the playfield. What's wrong with it?

#5 55 days ago
Quoted from JethroP:

Not much IIRC but Big Game is probably his favorite game. There's not much wrong with mine either (ball swirls in the white and some very minor insert wear) and I plan on swapping it to the Fantastic pinball one as well..... in the future, when I have copious free time (ha!) (this funny because I have 2 PF swaps in progress now, one for about 10 years, and the other for about 2 years..... need to finish those.....)

#6 55 days ago

Nice. Looking forward to this one. Good luck dude!

It looked at me wrong.

And this one talked dirty to me.

Yeah those inserts on the cards make me feel a little tingly inside.

#10 55 days ago

First lesson learned:

If you bought the awesome table top rotisserie from Bill Dent (pindoc restorations), follow the instrustions carefully if you bought the add on sliders. They are great for securing the playfield to the rotisserie, but make sure and put those on the playfield with the cross bar together. Then put that all on the rotisserie and put all the parts back on that hold the cross bar on!

Lots of progress tonight! I hate those carriage bolts they used on these games for some of the posts.

Two questions!
1. How come some of your posts are green? Was that factory?
2. Are you/Have you gotten new rails?

1. They are all green except for the ones I couldn’t get off when I swapped them out for green. Red is stock.

2. Yep. Reese rails and they are green too.

Nice. Was thinking about this whenever I get my new PF in. I like their color there.

#16 54 days ago

Your old playfield is so much better than my current playfield, let alone your new one. Color me green with envy.

Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see how it turns out. That said, an irrational part of me is afraid a new playfield, no matter how meticulous one is (and I am not), will never play as well as the original.

#17 54 days ago

Right there with you! That’s why I’m not replacing any mechs. I’ve updating my mechs over the years and everything plays great. I’m hoping that with only changing the playfield, it plays great still, just looks better. The old playfield will go on my wall for the rest of its days.

Good luck!

A nice upgrade is the plastic pop rings as used in the newer games retrofit into the older ones gives a better pop.... or you can swap coils too.

Are the oranges on your new playfield a little more red than your original playfield?

Yep. Totally red. Red orange at best.

Wire harness off! Now to start putting the power braid and GI sockets on the new playfield.

#30 52 days ago

I wish he would adjust the colors a little, looks like he did a great job. I just don’t understand colors being off that much and not fixing it. The Flash Gordon playfield CPR has the orange is messed up on it too. Instead of orange it is a pinkish red. I wouldn’t think it would be that hard with a digital print but I don’t know anything about it.

Thanks for sharing your swap, I always enjoy this type of thread. I have several in cue that I need to do.

#31 52 days ago

Yeah I don’t care. It’s different, but also way nicer. I don’t need it to be exact.

Oh I agree, my original isn't in very good shape and I will probably end up getting one of these as well.

That's just how CPR operates. They're pretty non apologetic aboot it and go on their way ("thats the way the donor we got was"). The first batch of FG had a weird black mark on all of them.

Hell, When they first did Catacombs they had wrong colored inserts.

Exactly, I haven't been very impressed with my purchases from CPR and don't care for their attitude about it either. I have one of the silk screened Meteor playfields and they left text off and one of the drop target openings is too small. It looks to me like with digital printing that everyone is doing now, I would think adjusting the colors to get it right would be pretty easy. Oh well at least we have reproduction options I guess.

No idea on the color TaylorVA made them. Not sure if he’s still doing rails or not.

Taking a little break this weekend. Up in Girard at Past Times Arcade for some fun and a mega matchplay tournament tomorrow. Watch on neopinball on twitch starting Saturday at 11am eastern!!

Well actually…

This is one of my playfields. I take the feedback from the clients quite seriously. There are variations between factory playfields and I tweek the reproductions done in each batch based on what I am told. You want an orange in that color layer? No problem. Next batch will have more orange and less red.

Also, anyone doing a playfield swap should consider sending their old playfield back to me for recycling. I am happy to sand them down and reprint them.

Totally missed this post!!! Congrats on diving in, you beat me to it, I borrowed a rotisserie from a friend weeks ago and haven't gotten to it, consider me inspired!!! Good luck on your journey! PF looks great in your lineup btw.

Yeah those aren't bad; and sure were a great fix before yopps.

I'm doing the same thing because I already bought the PCB boards, but I will use yopp's on the rest of the inserts.

#47 46 days ago

Big Game lends itself well to them with the open space. I plan on ripping out my PCBs on a game like Nine Ball where it's packed too tight

When wiring up the GI lights. Make sure the wire braid is going to the same terminals. I didn’t think of this, but got lucky and didn’t make any mistakes. One terminal is the bottom tab and the other is connected right to the socket. I believe as long as both are daisy chained to their like terminals throughout, you’re good. Anyone please correct me if I’m wrong.

Electrically since the G.I. lamps run AC the connections don't matter. But it is more professional to keep them alike the way you're doing. Thumbs up!
