My JD is not booting.
Turn the game on and the display shows 2 messages.
Factory settings restored
Totals cleared
These just cycle. Service buttons do nothing
Anyone experienced this fault before?
Yep. Odds are very good that there is alkaline damage. The batteries died so the SRAM does not hold state. The alkaline leaked and damaged the direct ground switches for the cabinet. You can't clear the factory settings restored because the service buttons don't work. Power cycling doesn't help because the SRAM state is not being held. It might be possible to do a quick power cycle to try to keep the SRAM state valid between that power cycle but you'll still need credits and the alkaline corrosion probably took out something else.
Still having a problem getting the service button to work.
So, I have replaced U16 and U17 and resistors r27-34.
Checked U16 inputs from the service buttons. The voltage is going low from the 12v as it should when the service begin test/enter button operated.
When I test the outputs though, the voltage stays at 5v.
Also, when testing the enter button input at U15, the meter probe hit the pin next to input (short pins 8 to 7) which initiated the menu.
Help please.
Quoted from Paulatron:When I test the outputs though, the voltage stays at 5v.
Measure if 12V, 5V and GND are present on U16

GND is there but no 12v or 5v.
Quoted from Paulatron:no 12v or 5v
That explains why there is no output.
As stated above, check for alkali corrosion. Some traces are likely gone around/underneath U16

Thanks for the help. The picture you provided helped me understand more of what is going on and made me get more familiar with the wpc schematic for the board.
I had found a couple of damaged traces when I replaced the damaged components, but clearly missed these ones.
I could not find the exact point where the voltage was failing so installed jumpers from the nearest 5 & 12v solder points to the appropriate pins on U16.
Just installed the board and the machine booted with working service buttons.
Set the date and had a couple of games. So far all seems good.
