I have a machine that had a overlay on it with a nice tear on it. I was successful at removing the overlay using a cold air duster, but then I ran into a thick layer of sticky wax I originally thought was the adhesive layer, but realized it was a thick layer of wax; not sure why they even put the overlay on to begin with? I originally tried Goo Gone, but that stuff was worthless and I found the best method was to use the cold air canister with a credit card to remove the wax. It did a good job for the most part and didn't damage the playfield, but now I am left with the remainder of the wax that won't come off or is imbedded. Not sure what I should do? Was wondering if I should try a wax remover substance or just give up and wax it and call it good?

naphtha. see vid’s playfield thread

Is that the right stuff? Notice the cloudiness on the playfield from the remaining wax?

from what i gathered from that thread and vid’s teachings, that’s best to use as it will cut fat/wax and not run the risk of warping the wood.

Overlay? It looks like regular Mylar. Are you sure that’s wax and not adhesive?

I'm pretty sure it was a thick layer of wax because it was also where the overlay wasn't. I got what I could off but no chemicals worked, including Namptha.

Really don't think you mean "overlay".
An overlay has the playfield art printed on it. It's used to restore a worn playfield and is installed to a bare wood playfield after sanding the damaged artwork off.
Seems like your game had a sheet of clear sticky mylar applied to protect the playfield. Sometimes the playfield is waxed prior to installing the mylar to make it easier to remove the mylar at some later time. But wax would clean off fairly easily, since it's wax.
Residue that's hard to remove really sounds like leftover adhesive and not like wax. There may have been mylar in other areas before you got the game.
Search removing mylar on here. Lots of tips for removing the adhesive.

Nice looking game.
