Romp in the Swamp IX

Small event main tourney with side tourneys

Designated as: Event is a tournament

Romp in the Swamp IX (April 27, 2024)

Hard to believe it is our 9th Romp in the Swamp Tourney, but here we are! Romp in the Swamp is traditionally the biggest tourney that Pinsiders’ PavBall and TigerLaw host in any given year. You can arrive as early as noon, we will likely not start the main tourney until 2pm but we will be starting all the side tourneys right at noon and there will be no practicing on any machine in any side tourney (but you can practice on the main tourney games before the main tourney commences).

Entry fee for the event is $20 per person (I know I normally waive the fee at my tourneys, but in this case we will be collecting the fee as we are going to be providing food, trophies, and some other things and this fee potentially covers all the main and side tourney IFPA fees). If it looks as though we are going to fill up you may be required to pay the entry fee prior to the event so we are certain you are in fact coming and do not take a spot from someone who wants to attend only to not materialize at the event.

We are going to limit the main tourney to 28 registered attendees (though we are authorizing for up to 30 attendees with the IFPA because if someone shows up at the door with their spouse or kid unexpectedly we do not want to have to turn them away…but we are going to stop accepting registrations at 28). You can register through the Louisiana IFPA rep Mike VanEtten at 337-962-4078 or by contacting Pinside moderators TigerLaw or Jodester via Pinside PM. You can register by providing your full name, home address, cell phone number, email and IFPA to number when reaching out to Mike or TigerLaw (if you do not have an IFPA number one will be obtained for you at the tourney, if you do not have an email that is also okay…but we simply must have the other data to reach you).

The format for the main tourney this year will utilize best game for the qualifying and then head to head for the finals. The qualifying will utilize the best game modified decay scoring structure through the Match Play software. Each game will be an arena and you will be allowed two plays on each arena, both plays will count toward your qualifying score. The top eight will then qualify for the finals (if we have 16 or fewer people attend the finals will just be four people). After the qualifying, the final 8 will be broken up into two groups of four (1, 3, 5, 7 and 2, 4, 6, 8 forming the groups) and will each play a single four player with last place dropping out (the two last place finishers will play head to for 7th and 8th place). The two groups of now three players will each play a three player game with last place dropping out (the two last place finishers will play head to head for 5th and 6th place). The two groups of two survivors will be merged into a single new group of four and will play a four player game with last place dropping out and finishing fourth. Then a three player game will occur with last place dropping out and finishing third. Then a final head to head game will be played for 1st and 2nd place.

The Primary Side Tourney to Romp in the Swamp IX will be a classics tourney of the oldest three games in the house (subject to change to a WMS game if one of the classic Sterns is giving us trouble). The format will be Best Game qualifying based on Matchplay’s 95% modified decay scoring formula. Each game will be deemed an arena and you will get two plays in each arena with both counting toward the best game scoring system; so there will be 6 meaningful games in the qualifying. The top four will be in the finals and will play a four player game with last place dropping out and finishing fourth. Then a three player game will occur with last place dropping out and finishing third. Then a final head to head game will be played for 1st and 2nd place.

The Secondary Side Tourney to Romp in the Swamp IX is “Assault the Vault” on the SC. You get one single play, best game, to qualify. Top four are in finals and each play one more game…top two out of that are then head to head for the win.

Romp in the Swamp Women’s Tourney: as we did not get to hold the earlier women’s tourney due to influenza striking our entire household; we are going to take this opportunity to have a very quick women’s tourney. We will select three games in the house that are not in any other side tourney for this women’s tourney. If there are less than eight women in this side tourney, the finals will be reduced from four to two (so only the top two would qualify).

Parking is highly limited. We need to completely pack in the driveway and try not to park in front of the neighbors’ houses. Carpooling is highly suggested where possible. Last year we packed 11 cars in our driveway and had another six on the road and that worked well. If anyone needs to get their entrees in early for any reason please let us know, we will likely have several people get their entrees in during the early morning prior to the event commencing including the two hosts (so that way they can focus on hosting) so they can be available to enter scores and what not during the tourney.

Please be aware we do run background checks on attendees and you must be free from felony charge to be welcome at this event. Children will be present so please do not bring any pot and do not get obnoxiously drunk.
